Armenian-American Action Network is organizing hundreds of thousands of Armenians through convening and anchoring a coalition of constituency-based organizations fighting for the inclusion of a MENA category with an Armenian subcheckbox.

We support the inclusion of a new MENA category and maintain it must include the Armenian population. The substantial size of the Armenian community in the US and the transnational indigenous origins of the Armenian community in the MENA region necessitates an Armenian sub-checkbox within the MENA category, so that US Armenians are not subsumed nor erased. As proud American civil, immigrant and refugee rights organizations we wish to express profound gratitude to the OMB for its work for

The 2023 Armenian-American Community Census Survey is a nationally representative survey that provides contradictory findings to the 2015 National Content Test (NCT) and Race and Ethnicity Analysis Report, particularly pertaining to the newly proposed MENA subcategories. The 2023 Armenian Community Census Survey, conducted online with 99% confidence interval and 1% margin of error. Participants were asked whether they supported being counted as one of the MENA populations. The results of the survey show (N=685) that 92% of Armenians do not see their identity or origins reflected in the current US Census categories (White, Asian, Black or African American, Native or Other Pacific Islander). Furthermore, an overwhelming 94% of the nationally representative sample strongly supports the inclusion of an Armenian checkbox under the MENA checkbox.

As a U.S. civil rights organization we firmly support the inclusion of a MENA Checkbox and insist it must include an Armenian category, in order to provide accurate and inclusive data of residents of the United States.
